DesignMarch is here again in 2017

Added on by Sturla Mar Jonsson.

Once again Reykjavík annual design festival "DesignMarch" is taking place, as the name implies, in March 2017. There will be exhibitions and venues all over the city like never before with hundreds of talented designers and manufacturers participating.

In the exhibition at Harpa I will be premiering three new items for AXIS, all based on simple geometry but with useful properties, callbox. box office and box sofa.  Ásgeir, our fantastic craftsman, has been busy making these things during the past weeks.

At Sólóhúsgögn there will be a new chair on show. Everybody has been kept busy to the last minute finalizing the items and the last stitches in the upholstery are being made now just a day before the opening ceremony.

IÐA Rocke´n roller seat debuts at Designmarch

Added on by Sturla Mar Jonsson.

IÐA rock'n roller seat made a debut during Designmarch 2016 at The Reykjavik Art Museum. As the name implies it is a seat that rokcs and rolles and can be used in various ways. It is made of just five pieces that fasten together with eight screws. It is being developed to flatpack into a nice box to allow easy carrying and easy assembly at home. Materials are oak, steel and leather or cowhide upholstery.

Preparing for Designmarch 2016

Added on by Sturla Mar Jonsson.

Time passes quickly and the annual Icelandic Designmarch is just a few weeks away. There is still a lot of work to be done. I could have begun this work some time ago but it seems that the longer time I have the longer it takes to do the job. Must try to break this habit before I get old :-)

I´ll be showing new designs for manufacturers at Reykjavik Art Museum and also staging an exhibition at the Grótta Gallery ín my hometown Seltjarnarnes. I'll share the gallery with designer Thorunn Arnadóttir, an outstanding designer who's work I admire very much. Although in the same gallery these will be two independent exhibitions.

In Grótta I will be exhibiting one-off work which I will make in the workshop. This is just for fun, no serious manufacturing restrictions, so the design will take final shape as the building advances. Most of the forms are based on something which I find inspiring and memorable - they are represented as free form Butler stands from wood and metal.  In Iceland a similar thing was sometimes called a Priest because vestment was kept on it. The circular tops are mirrors for powdering ones nose - for those who do - others can just admire themselves. The mirror is simply named "Mirror, mirror..." resembling the words of the Evil Queen in the story of Snow White so the person looking in the mirror at any given time is "the fairest of them all".

Different flower pot lamp.

Added on by Sturla Mar Jonsson.

My daughter longs for a Flower Pot lamp by Verner Panton for her new flat but can not afford it at the moment. With a couple of clay pots, brightly coloured cord and a spray can I made her these lamps in an effort to keep her happy while she is saving up for the real thing. Not a Verner Panton lamp but a flower pot just the same :-)

"Aría" Writing Desk

Added on by Sturla Mar Jonsson.

Aria tables come in various configurations. One of them is a writing desk 65 x 120 or 140 cm with a drawer and with or without a  top shelve. This one was in the shop at Solohúsgögn awaiting delivery as gift just before Christmas.

DesignMarch / HönnunarMars 2014

Added on by Sturla Mar Jonsson.

DesignMarch 2014 was better than ever this year with lots of products and interesting things to see and experience in Reykjavík.

Sturla participated in two venues taking place in  Harpa Concert Hall - the "Íslensk Húsgögn" (Icelandic Furniture) exhibition by Icelandic furniture manufacturers and the "7 Saman" (7 Together) exhibition showing works of seven independent designers.

Axis introduced a new range of Stemma school furniture, "Símaklefi" a  sparkling red Call Box  with textile inspired by the Eyjafjallajökull eruption , "Léttveggir" transportable partition screens, "Strendingar" hexagonal multi- purpose pods and new additions to Stemma office furniture and the popular Einrúm high-back sofa. Also on show were various sound absorbing solutions which could be tried out in a specially made sound chamber.

Sólóhúsgögn introduced "Glæsir" and "Sesta", thee new chair frames for Italian chair shells, "Retró" a new line of table tops with steel edges inspired by the 1950-1960´s and the fully developed "Gotti" stackable chair which was introduced last year.

The "7 Saman" exhibition showed a different approach with "Hnallar" - three cabinet boxes in different heights and colours. When opened the interior has the same colour as the exterior of the next box. These were custom made by the designer for the exhibition and are the first of a series of one-off experimental furniture which he will make in his newly acquired workshop. One box was given away in a quiz on Facebook and the winner Aldís Líf Vigfúsdóttir and her family collected it promptly at the end of the closing day.
